Dorcus was born and raised in Nakuru Kenya, she’s relocated to Nairobi. She had to write her Kenya Certificate Of Primary Education (KCPE) during the 2007 tension within their area. During this time, she had to relocate which led to her struggling with school fees to a point where her mom had to sell her bed to put food on the table. This didn’t stop Dorcus though, she managed to get into university and get a job. Soon after, her dedicated mindset and hard work helped her start her own company where she offers services as a Leadership Coach, Corporate Trainer, and Keynote/Motivational speaker.

Dorcus used her life experience to help others conquer difficult situations – she used all of her challenges and turned them into lessons to help her navigate life and anything it might throw at her.

In a nutshell, she would like to show girls that it does not matter where you come from, what you have gone through and which family you belong to. The only thing you need is the "self-belief and the actions required to step forward".

What are 5 facts about yourself: I am responsible, I always try to get things right, I’m organised, creative and friendly.

What aspirations/goals did you have growing up? I wanted to work in the financial sector and to get a degree in business management. I also wanted to make sure that I could help my family with whatever they need.

Did people give you negative responses when you told them about your goals? Oh, yes! Somebody told me that girls shouldn’t be educated. This motivated me to work even harder because I knew how much staying in school would benefit me.

GirlPossible Tip on education

School can be tough, and we understand that you just want to get going and get your life started. But just like Dorcus, the value of education is priceless, it will help you make informed decisions one day and it will give you a range of options to choose from when the time comes. It can really help you unlock your full potential.

How did you deal with the negativity? I tried to always be positive. I believed in myself and found things to motivate me. I celebrated myself by remembering what I could do and worked hard towards achieving my dreams.

What advice were you given about working towards your goals? I was told to work hard to achieve my goals.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Work like a donkey while at school and live a king/queen in the future OR live like a king/queen while at school and work like a donkey in future.

What are 4 things that helped you stick to your dreams? 1. I wrote all my goals and read them to myself, often. 2. I pictured myself achieving my goals. 3. I looked for information about what I needed to start my own business. What did you tell yourself when you wanted to give up? I reminded myself that staying in school would benefit me in the future. I also reminded myself about the sacrifices that my parents made so I could go to school and succeed.

Why do you think that it’s important to set goals? Goals help you stay on track when you’re working towards making your dreams a reality. They’re always at the back of your mind like a song. Setting goals can help you get through difficult times when you’re discouraged.

GirlPossible Tip on setting goals

For Dorcus, there wasn’t just one goal that kept her going. Small steps helped her get to the bigger dream. Becoming a motivational speaker, she had to become comfortable to talk in front of other people, a small goal that helped set everything else in motion. - Break down your goals - Plan your first step - Don’t be afraid to fail

GirlPossible Tip on talking about your goals

Dorcus was faced with a lot of negativity about wanting to become a businesswoman and start her own company. But she confided in her family and close friends, people who she trusted. Remember: ● Start by talking to people who know you and who you trust ● Look for people in your community who’ve started their own business or who help run a business, small or big. They can give you information about what you should do the start your own business. ● Start within your close circles and work your way out. Family, friends, business owners – these will help you prepare for future conversations.

What message do you have for girls like you? Think carefully about what your goals are and write them down. Find out what you need to do to reach them. What do you have to study and what subjects do you need for example? Stay focused and believe in yourself. Don’t listen to people who say that you can’t do it.

You are the only person who understands how important reaching your dreams are to you. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what you are going through right now or how big your dreams are. You can do it. Believe in yourself and the potential that you have.

Finding your #GirlPossible

It can feel like it takes forever to reach that end goal but remember that the steps you put in place help you prepare. For Dorcus kicking off her career couldn’t come soon enough, but she knew the value of education. Wanna know how? ● All those hours in the math class now help her balance her books. Maths = money! ● Having to do presentations in front of class might have been scary at first, but little did she know that was preparing for her future to inspire others just like her. ● Getting a job to help her pay for school taught her how to be responsible.

Think about how your education is helping you prepare for your future.
