My brother loves helping mum in the kitchen - he has such a good nose for flavours! He will help pick out the best vegetables from the market with her and he has even started to grow his own garden in our backyard with tomatoes and herbs.
I seem to burn anything I try to cook. But I have my own hobby - helping my dad with fixing up cars. My dad is a mechanic, and ever since I was a little girl, I loved being his assistant. Usually, I would just hold stuff for him and watch, but lately, he has let me do more serious jobs.
His business is growing and he needs some official support. I am going to apply for the role of his assistant, but my friends and our wider family think it is my brother who should be working with my dad.
My brother doesn’t want to be anywhere near the dirty cars or the fumes - he loves being out in nature with the garden and watching things grow. He is spending the summer as a junior chef at a local cafe - so he has no time for cars.
There was no way I was gonna let people's opinions stop me from going for the job - I knew I had the skills as I had grown up in that car garage. So I worked up a business case for convincing my dad it should be me.
I told him he could treat me like any other candidate and give me a job test and if I pass - I should get the role. He made me do some tests on a car like replacing the wiper blades and touching up chipped paint. I passed with flying colours!
My friends who originally laughed when I told them I wanted the job are now so impressed with my work.
I’m so happy that both me and my brother followed our dreams and didn’t listen to what other people thought we should do.
