6 Great questions to ask your mentor

Get the conversation flowing

Have you ever started a conversation with someone and it only lasted 5 minutes because you didn’t know what else to say? Yup! We’ve all been there. Especially when it comes to speaking to older people like parents, guardians or mentors.

When you think about it, there’s really no need to be shy or worried about awkward situations. You just need to get creative about the questions you’re asking. For instance, not knowing what to ask a mentor is no reason not to find and connect with one. Being afraid to talk to people is a feeling we all go through, but it isn’t going to make you the successful woman you want to be in the future.

Mentors are experienced people who help guide less experienced people in an area they are interested in. They often challenge you to open your eyes and mind and see things from a different perspective. They can make such a big difference in your life if you apply the lessons they teach you to everyday situations. They say “success leaves clues” and conversations with mentors are meant for exactly that! So ask good questions. Listen to the tips and clues they leave. Apply it to your life and grow, grow, grow! It doesn’t sound like a bad idea, right?

If you’re ever struggling to make conversation with your mentor, here are some great questions that will light a fire and get the conversation flowing!

  1. How did you land your current role?

  2. How did you learn to embrace failure?

  3. Was there ever a job position that you applied for and got, but you weren’t 100% qualified for?

  4. How do you approach decision making?

  5. Where do you see my strengths, and what should I focus on to improve?

  6. What new skills do I need to move ahead?
